Online Quran classes have made it possible for Muslim families everywhere to give their children a quality Quran education without the weekly drive to a distant madrasah. But with so many academies to choose from, how do you know which one is right for your child? Here is the checklist we would use ourselves.
1. Are the teachers properly qualified?
Look for tutors who are Huffaz or graduates of recognised Islamic institutions, with Tajweed certification (ideally an Ijazah). Just as important is teaching experience with children — knowing the Quran and being able to teach a seven-year-old are two different skills.
2. Is the class one-to-one?
Group classes can be cheaper, but in a 30-minute group lesson your child may only read for a few minutes. One-to-one lessons mean every minute is spent reading, being corrected and progressing.
3. Can you choose a female teacher?
Many parents prefer a female teacher for daughters and younger children. A good academy will offer both and let you choose.
4. Will the schedule work in your time zone?
Ask whether the academy has teachers available at after-school times in your local time zone — Eastern or Pacific in North America, GMT/BST in the UK, or AEST/AWST in Australia — and whether they handle daylight-saving changes for you.
5. Is there a clear syllabus?
Progress should follow a structured path: Noorani Qaida → Quran reading → Tajweed → memorisation. Ask what your child will learn this month, and how you will know they have learned it.
6. How is progress reported?
Regular progress reports, lesson notes and the option to sit in on classes keep you in the loop and keep your child accountable.
7. Is it safe?
Classes should run on a reputable platform such as Zoom or Google Meet, parents should be able to observe at any time, and teachers should be vetted. Never accept classes on a platform you are not comfortable with.
8. Is there a free trial?
A trial class is the best way to judge a teacher's patience, English communication and teaching style. Reputable academies offer one without asking for payment details.
9. Are the fees transparent?
You should be able to see the monthly fee upfront, in your own currency, with no registration charges or long contracts.
10. Does your child enjoy it?
Ultimately, the best academy is the one your child looks forward to. Encouragement, rewards and a warm teacher make all the difference to a lifelong love for the Quran.
At Talib e Quran we built our academy around exactly these points. Book a free trial class and judge for yourself.
