If you have ever wondered how children around the world learn to read the Quran so fluently, the answer is often a small booklet called the Noorani Qaida. Compiled by Sheikh Noor Muhammad Haqqani, it teaches Arabic reading step by step, building correct Tajweed habits from the very first lesson.
What does the Noorani Qaida cover?
- The Arabic alphabet — each letter pronounced from its correct point of articulation (makhraj).
- Joined letters — how letters change shape at the start, middle and end of a word.
- Harakat — the short vowels fatha, kasra and damma.
- Tanween, sukoon and shaddah.
- Madd (elongation) letters and their lengths.
- Basic Tajweed rules such as Qalqalah and Ghunnah.
How long does it take?
With three 30-minute one-to-one classes a week, most children complete the Qaida in 3–6 months. Adults usually progress faster. Consistency matters more than speed — a few minutes of daily practice between lessons makes a huge difference.
Why not go straight to the Quran?
Skipping the Qaida often leads to mistakes that are hard to unlearn later. The Qaida builds a solid foundation so that when your child opens the Mushaf, they can read independently and correctly.
How parents can help at home
- Sit with your child for 5–10 minutes a day to revise the last lesson.
- Praise effort, not just accuracy.
- Keep the same Qaida edition your tutor uses.
- Celebrate milestones — finishing the Qaida is a big deal!
